Mask essay....
Representing Identity
Anish Wells
The word identity is a funny thing. It could represent your opinion on ideas or how you dress and even to how you can picture things in your head! But for me the word identity means who I am, and what I do, so this is my identity summed up in a mask for all of you here tonight to see.
My mask that I have presented here has its eyes closed because it represents how my back is turned towards some moments in life; moments I want to help with but I am either too lazy or I just don’t have the funds. As an example I want to help the sumatran tigers from being poached but what can I do!? I’m only fourteen!
My mouth is closed because I am a “child” which is one of the target groups in society, and it represents the “don't speak unless spoken to” rule which, in this day and age, is not as prominent as it used to be but can still be used as something against me on rare occasions.
I have the words MUSIC and ART on my mask because those are some of the things that represent me and that I love. I have a Colorado flag on the bottom of my mask because I have been born and raised here all my life just like my father and his father before him.
I have a one dollar bill on my mask because it represents that my family has money, but not a lot, I can get clothes and skateboards but its hard for me to get the money to buy things like that because my mom has been having trouble lately with her job and my dad is the only one bringing in income.
My mask has a flat brimmed hat on it because that represents how my friends and my classmates have socialized me or “categorized” me into being a “skater”, and I try to put myself in that category too because that is what I like to do and I feel that it is a good category for me to be in. I do love to skate and it is one of the main qualities that I have, I have been skating since I was six and I feel it definitely defined how I am now as a person.
The mask also has a basketball on the eye because that represents my sporty side and that I like to play sports, plus I have been playing basketball since I was about five so that is definitely a prominent skill that has defined me as a human too.
My masks left eye has a scar on it because that represents how my “gender norms” are, like, “oh there is Anish Wells, the skinny kid, he should not fight” because I am supposed to be a tough guy who has a perfect body and works out every day, basically the ken of “Barbie”. For Males its like they are supposed to be really tough and are supposed to fight other guys to make themselves look “cool” in a girls eyes.
At the conclusion of my essay, I will talk about the four words on my mask; LOVED. HATED, DEFINED and SOCIAL. To start off, we have SOCIAL. Social is a definite part of my nature as a human being, I have lots of friends and I am social with my family, I'm even social with my cat! Interacting with other beings is part of me and that's why I put it on my mask.
For the second word, I have LOVED because I am loved by my family, for what would be a family without love?
For the third word I have HATED, because nobody is perfect and there is always going to be that one who hates you from the start for absolutely no reason. And you can try to stop the hate but it is going to be very difficult.
For the last word I have defined because everything I have here written today has defined me, as a human or as a teenager, as a man or as a skater.
