I chose the medium that I did because I was interested with food photography, but that led me to a whole new topic, food advertising and child obesity in the American culture.
I used different colored pencils and sketching pencils to create a drawing of a child who looked like they were on drugs. This was to represent that food advertising to children can and should be considered a form of brainwashing.
I would not redo this project because I believe that I did a good job and that it didn't need refinement.

The Delicious Burger.
By Anish Wells
The delicious burger that you see on the television. The greasy fries and the chocolate milkshake. What if I told you that it was all a lie? And all the perfect looking food that you see on TV and on signs in the store is all not real, it’s all a big scam so that the human eye will recognize the way that food looks and want it….That’s what It all comes down to, wanting the food. Making sure that every human being wants the food that the corporate food companies are advertising so that they get more money.
What I want to know and accomplish wish this paper is if my hypothesis is true. Food advertising to children under the age of eight is a form of brainwashing and is causing childhood obesity rates to go up dramatically. We can all agree, we’ve had a burger or any kind of fast food in our life’s, there’s no denying it, but have you noticed that none of the burgers you have gotten have looked like the ones on the picture? That’s because the ones on the picture aren’t actually food, just a giant pile of processed mush, held together by even more processing.
Food Photography….More like Fake photography, the companies hire art specialists to create basically the perfect food, an alteration of the truth to make it look like that’s what you’re getting when you order it. The processes of food photography usually requires an art director, a photographer, a food stylist, a prop stylist and their assistants. That’s a lot of people just to take a photo of a burger. But that’s how much effort the compan0ies put into their photos so that they look delicious.
Most of the money that is put towards food advertising goes toward the most consumed foods, so fast and cheap ones like McDonald’s and Burger King. That’s hours and hours of McDonalds’ ad’s put into children’s faces, the average child watches around four hours of television a day. (According to http://www.frankwbaker.com/mediause.htm.) And around one and a half hours of that are ads. That media image burned into their heads of the golden arches, or of that Clown, which brings me to another point, children respond to bright colors and shiny toys, which is why the fast food companies have happy meals, to bring the kids into the whole scheme, (as if they weren’t in it enough already)
Inside of food advertising is a whole other topic, Child obesity. Some of the causes of childhood obesity said in this article A Growing Problem is:
Lack of physical activity. (normally you should spend around 3-4 hours outside a day.) Unhealthy eating patterns. (Parents should teach their kids to eat healthy and organic.) Blood types.(Sometimes you can’t help it) Genes. Advertising of unhealthy foods. As I said before, children are being brainwashed to want these foods because the image of the companies are being drilled into their brains.
Childhood obesity can cause these effects, according to Heart.org:
High blood pressure, (which can cause heart attacks or blood clots.) Diabetes, (Which can damage blood vessels and nerves.) Elevated blood cholesterol. (which will increase chances of strokes.) Low self-esteem/depression. (Can increase chances of suicide.) Earlier death.
Obesity is not a fun matter, whether you are an adult or a child. It can increase chances of many diseases and basically just increase the chance of overall death faster. You can help stop obesity by doing a few basic things, just advise your children not to eat lots of unhealthy food and don’t promote excessive video gaming or Television watching, Children are dependent on their parents for food and facts about their heath so buy healthy and advise them not to eat unhealthy.
About 55 million school-aged children are enrolled in schools across the United States, and many eat and drink meals and snacks there. Yet, more than half of U.S. middle and high schools still offer sugary drinks and less healthy foods for purchase. Students have access to sugary drinks and less healthy foods at school throughout the day from vending machines, According to http://health.usnews.com/healthnews/dietfitness/diabetes/articles/2008/10/06/vending-machines-found-in-most-middle-schools Three-quarters of middle schools have vending machines where snacks and sugared drinks are sold, and when you look at that with perspective, that’s a lot of middle schools and a lot of sugary drinks.
Taken from the website Position of the American Dietetic Association They state that, In recent years, the food and beverage industry in the US has viewed children and adolescents as a major market force. As a result, children and adolescents are now the target of intense and specialized food marketing and advertising efforts.
Food marketers are interested in youth as consumers because of their spending power, their purchasing influence, and as future adult consumers. Multiple techniques and channels are used to reach youth, beginning when they are toddlers, to foster brand-building and influence food product purchase behavior. These food marketing channels include television advertising, in-school marketing, product placements, kids clubs, the Internet, toys and products with brand logos, and youth-targeted promotions, such as cross-selling and tie-ins. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC416565/ Like I said before the food industry spends most of its money on the products that are most consumed, well this is like spending most your money on the people who consume the most.
Nutrition during childhood and adolescence is essential for growth and development, health and well-being. As said in the article Healthy Eating Habits for Your Child. By teaching your children healthy eating habits, and modeling these behaviors in yourself, you can help your children maintain a healthy weight and normal growth. Also, the eating habits your children pick up when they are young will help them maintain a healthy lifestyle when they are adults.
Eating behaviors established during childhood track into adulthood and contribute to long-term health and chronic disease risk. So if you don’t teach your child how to eat healthy when their young it’s going to be hard for them to learn when they are older. And that is going to lead to bad heath and maybe increased earlier death rates.
As http://fit.webmd.com/teen/food/article/fast-food-advertising states, A study of almost 100,000 food ads on TV showed that 89% of ads that teenagers see are promoting products high in fat, sugar, and/or sodium.
Conclusion.
The evidence that I have stated in this article shows that children are being effected by the ad’s on television and the ones that watch ad’s are getting more obese. I believe that it has to do with the image of these fast food restaurants being burned into their heads, making them constantly think about the food that they fast food restaurants are portraying and showing in their commercials. It is not healthy for young children to be exploited by the food companies, it’s not fair for them to be shown these ad’s when they barely know how to speak or walk.

A study of almost 100,000 food ads on TV showed that 89% of ads that teenagers see are promoting products high in fat, sugar, and/or sodium. This is relevant because my paper is about food advertising.

There are a variety of environmental factors that determine whether or not the healthy choice is the easy choice for children and their parents. American society has become characterized by environments that promote increased consumption of less healthy food and physical inactivity. This has to do with my paper because it talks about healthy choices and some factors in the healthy choice.

Project Reflection
This project was about food and how it affects humans and the environment, also it was about educating yourself in your food choices so that they don't hurt you or cause any damage to the people around you. In this project we studied GMO’s, antibiotics, and other food preservatives. We also learned about company’s such as Monsanto.
I connected to this project because of my change in thinking; At the beginning of the project I was choosing to go to Mcdonald's and Dairy Queen, but as we went further and further into the project i realized that I don't like that kind of food, and that I should stop eating it because its affecting the environment and its affecting me. Recently I have been trying to stop eating at those places and hopefully I stop completely soon.
This project was difficult because it was hard to see the delicious food that I was eating from these fast food restaurants, full of grease and fat, be taken away by my own conscience, after I saw the movie food inc, I could not eat McDonalds for weeks. Even though I knew from the start that these foods were terrible for me I would still eat them because lets face it, everybody knows they taste delicious.
If I were to come back and redo this project i would probably start earlier, just because I feel like I could have made this whole paper more revised and over all better. I learned that I need to work on my punctuation and my spelling, it took me awhile to get all of those things perfect.
I believe that you have to make due with the best you can; You cannot bash all of the food that you eat because you think that it will give you cancer, you just have to look on the positive side and know that if its the best you can do, then live with it. If you feel like you can change it, then try but if you know that you can't then don't bother worrying.
